Multidimensional P-spline Mixed Models: A unified approach to smoothing on large grids

چکیده
We consider multidimensional penalized spline mixed models. Currie et al. (2006) emphasized the array nature of the method and Eilers et al. (2006) used multidimensional P -splines together with a new fast and compact algorithm. We combine these ideas and show how to represent multidiensional Psplines as mixed models and propose an atractive unified approach to models which include smooth and random terms.

A Partial Likelihood Approach to the Smooth Estimation of Dynamic Covariate Effects
Survival data are often modelled by the Cox proportional hazards model, which assumes that covariate effects are constant over time. In recent years however, several new approaches have been suggested which allow covariate effects to vary with time. Non-proportional hazard functions, with covariate effects changing dynamically, can be fitted using penalised spline (P -spline) smoothing. By util...
متن کاملFast and compact smoothing on large multidimensional grids
A framework of penalized generalized linear models and tensor products of B-splines with roughness penalties allows effective smoothing of data in multidimensional arrays. A straightforward application of the penalized Fisher scoring algorithm quickly runs into storage and computational difficulties. A novel algorithm takes advantage of the special structure of both the data as an array and the...
متن کاملBayesian hierarchical linear mixed models for additive smoothing splines
Bayesian hierarchical models have been used for smoothing splines, thin-plate splines, and L-splines. In analyzing high dimensional data sets, additive models and backfitting methods are often used. A full Bayesian analysis for such models may include a large number of random effects, many of which are not intuitive, so researchers typically use noninformative improper or nearly improper priors...
متن کاملPenalized spline smoothing in multivariable survival models with varying coefficients
The paper discusses penalised spline (P -spline) smoothing for hazard regression of multivariable survival data. Non-proportional hazard functions are fitted in a numerically handy manner by employing Poisson regression which results from numerical integration of the cumulative hazard function. Multivariate smoothing parameters are selected by utilizing the connection between P -spline smoothin...
متن کاملUsing recursive algorithms for the efficient identification of smoothing spline ANOVA models
In this paper we present a unified discussion of different approaches to the identification of smoothing spline analysis of variance (ANOVA) models: (i) the “classical” approach (in the line of Wahba in Spline Models for Observational Data, 1990; Gu in Smoothing Spline ANOVA Models, 2002; Storlie et al. in Stat. Sin., 2011) and (ii) the State-Dependent Regression (SDR) approach of Young in Nonl...
